IPbaseret, or IP-based control, describes methods that use a device’s IP address to identify, authorize, or restrict access to a resource. It can be applied at various points in a system, including firewalls, reverse proxies, web servers, and content delivery networks, and is often used as part of a layered security or access policy rather than as the sole authentication method.

Common uses include allowing or blocking traffic from specific IP addresses, regions, or ranges (IP allowlists and blocklists), and implementing geo-blocking to enforce regional licensing or compliance rules. IP-based controls are also used for rate limiting, abuse prevention, and allotting different access levels based on known source addresses. In practice, IP-based decisions are frequently complemented by other controls such as user credentials, tokens, or TLS client certificates to form defense-in-depth.

Implementation typically involves configuring network devices or software to inspect and act on the source IP address. This can involve firewall rules, network ACLs, WAF policies, or CDN-edge rules. Organizations may also incorporate IP reputation data and geolocation services to inform decisions, while maintaining logs for auditing and troubleshooting.

Limitations and considerations include the dynamic nature of IP addresses (via DHCP, mobile networks, or VPNs), NAT, and shared devices, which can undermine the reliability of identifying a single user. IP-based measures can lead to false positives or negatives and may be circumvented by users employing proxies or VPNs. Privacy considerations are important, as IP addresses can be treated as personal data in some jurisdictions, necessitating appropriate data handling and consent where required.
