Hysteresisfree

Hysteresisfree, often written hysteresis-free or hysteresisfree, is an adjective used in physics, materials science, and engineering to describe systems, materials, or responses that exhibit negligible or no hysteresis. Hysteresis refers to a dependence of a system’s state on its history, commonly seen as a loop in a plot of output versus input when the driving variable is cycled. A hysteresisfree response is one in which the output is a function of the current input only, within a defined operating range, and the response path does not depend on past excursions.

In magnetism, hysteresis is the energy loss that occurs during magnetization cycles. Hysteresisfree materials are idealized soft magnetic materials with very low coercivity and remanence; in practice, certain soft ferrites and high-permeability alloys can approximate hysteresisfree behavior over limited ranges, yielding nearly proportional B–H curves and minimal energy loss. In other domains, such as ferroelectricity, thermodynamics, and mechanics, the concept corresponds to reversible or path-independent behavior: a truly hysteresisfree process is reversible and history-independent, with real systems only approximating this under slow, quasi-static, low-loss conditions.

Measuring hysteresis often involves the area enclosed by a hysteresis loop; the smaller the loop, the closer the system is to hysteresisfree behavior. Applications where reduced hysteresis improves accuracy and efficiency include high-precision sensors and actuators, and energy-efficient magnetic components. It is important to note that hysteresisfree is typically an idealization or an approximation, as real systems always exhibit some residual hysteresis due to defects, finite rates, and temperature effects.
