Hyrcanus
Hyrcanus is a name used in the Hellenistic and Hasmonean periods of Jewish history, most notably borne by two Hasmonean leaders who held both priestly and political authority in Judea. The form Hyrcanus is the Latinized version of a Hebrew name, traditionally understood as meaning that the Lord has exalted.
Hyrcanus I, traditionally identified as the son of Simon Thassi, became high priest and ruler of Judea
Hyrcanus II, the son of Alexander Jannaeus and Salome Alexandra, later held the office of high priest
The name Hyrcanus thus identifies two principal Hasmonean figures who bridged religious leadership and political authority
