Hypotoniasäiliöinti refers to a method used in water management and civil engineering to control and regulate water flow, particularly in flood-prone areas or where water levels need to be managed. The term combines "hypotonia," which can imply a lower pressure or less forceful state, and "säiliöinti," meaning storage or accumulation. In essence, it describes a system designed to create a controlled, lower-pressure reservoir or basin that can absorb and hold excess water.

This technique often involves the construction of specially designed basins, ponds, or retention areas that are not intended to be constantly full but rather to act as temporary storage during periods of high rainfall or snowmelt. The water gradually enters these areas, reducing the peak flow downstream and preventing or mitigating flooding. Once the immediate threat has passed, the stored water is typically released slowly and in a controlled manner, often through engineered outlets, to minimize downstream impact.

Hypotoniasäiliöinti can be implemented in various forms, from naturalistic depressions designed to mimic wetlands to more engineered concrete structures.
