Hydrokinetiksi is a term used to describe the conversion of kinetic energy in moving water into usable mechanical or electrical energy. The word derives from the Greek roots hydro meaning "water" and kinētikos meaning "moving" or "dynamic," combined with a suffix that indicates a device or system. In practice, hydrokinetiksi generally refers to small‐scale or distributed hydroelectric technologies that operate at low heads, such as river currents, tidal streams, or storm surge.

Unlike conventional hydroelectric dams, which rely on large reservoirs and significant drop heights, hydrokinetiksi devices are typically streamlined turbines or propeller‑type machines that can be installed in natural flow paths without extensive civil works. The technology is often characterized by its minimal environmental footprint: fish passage can be facilitated through carefully designed openings, and sediment transport is largely maintained. Because the mechanical components are submerged and thus protected from weather, the maintenance cycles are shorter than in surface installations, though corrosion remains a challenge.

Applications of hydrokinetiksi include powering remote sensors, floating solar arrays, and community microgrids in riverine or tidal regions. In the 21st century, several pilots have demonstrated its viability; for instance, a 10 kW tidal turbine installed in a tidal basin in the United Kingdom produced approximately 550 kWh per year, sufficient to power a small off‑grid community. The technology is also being explored for integration with existing irrigation infrastructure, where water can be diverted through a hydrokinetiksi system to generate electricity while delivering irrigation flow downstream.

Because hydrokinetiksi elements often share design characteristics with marine wind turbines—such as up‑stream positioning to reduce wake effects—research has focused on optimizing blade geometry for steady currents as well as irregular tidal cycles. Advances in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and materials science are driving incremental improvements in power coefficients and operational life expectancy. The field continues to grow in response to the increasing demand for low‑impact renewable energy sources that can tap the kinetic potential of moving water without causing major hydrological disruptions.
