Hyönteiskarkotteina, known in English as insect repellents, are substances or devices designed to deter insects from approaching humans or animals. Their primary purpose is to prevent bites and the potential transmission of diseases carried by insects, such as malaria, dengue fever, and West Nile virus.

The most common active ingredients in insect repellents are chemicals like DEET (N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide), Picaridin (also known as KBR 3023 or icaridin), and oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE). These chemicals work by interfering with the insects' olfactory receptors, making it difficult for them to locate their hosts. DEET is a widely used and effective repellent, though some individuals may experience skin irritation or other side effects. Picaridin is another effective option that is often considered less greasy and less likely to damage plastics than DEET. Oil of lemon eucalyptus, a natural alternative, is derived from the eucalyptus tree and has demonstrated effectiveness against mosquitoes.

In addition to chemical repellents, various physical and natural methods are employed. These include mosquito nets, protective clothing, fans that create air currents insects find difficult to navigate, and certain plants like citronella, lavender, and basil that are believed to have repellent properties. The effectiveness of natural repellents can vary greatly and is often less long-lasting than chemical options.

When selecting and using insect repellents, it is important to follow product instructions carefully, especially regarding application on children and pregnant women. Choosing a repellent appropriate for the specific insects in a given area and for the duration of exposure can maximize protection and minimize risks.
