Human-on-the-loop is a supervisory paradigm for automated and AI-driven systems in which the system primarily operates autonomously but is continuously monitored by a human supervisor who can intervene or override algorithmic decisions when necessary. Under this model, the system processes data, generates actions or recommendations, and executes them up to a defined threshold. A human observer maintains situational awareness and retains the authority to pause, modify, or halt actions, effectively supervising rather than directly approving every step. It sits between fully autonomous operation and human-in-the-loop control, balancing efficiency with human oversight.

The approach is discussed in contexts such as aviation automation, industrial robotics, autonomous transportation with driver monitoring, and critical decision-support systems in healthcare and public safety, where accountability and safety are prioritized. It is considered a practical middle ground in settings where complete automation may be inappropriate or risky, but real-time human input cannot be provided for every decision.

Advantages include improved safety through supervisory oversight and the ability to handle novel or unexpected events that the system was not explicitly trained for. Challenges involve potential overreliance on automation, latency in human response, alert fatigue, deskilling, and the need for transparent interfaces and robust override mechanisms.
