Human-in-the-loop (HITL) is a design approach in automation and artificial intelligence in which humans participate in the decision-making process of a system. Rather than operating fully autonomously, HITL systems involve human oversight, validation, or input at one or more points to guide, correct, or approve automated outputs.

HITL can be implemented in online (real-time) modes, where a human reviewer assesses or intervenes during operation, or in offline modes, such as labeling data, auditing results, or updating models during training. The concept is central to interactive and active learning, where human feedback improves model performance and safety.

Applications span content moderation and risk assessment, medical imaging and diagnostic support, aviation and industrial control where safety margins require human judgment, and data-labeling for supervised learning. HITL is also used in decision-support tools, search and recommendation systems, and automated decision processes that specify a human review gate before final outcomes are enacted.

Key design considerations include latency and throughput requirements, the accuracy gains from human input, the usability of interfaces, escalation policies, and accountability frameworks. Systems should balance automation speed with the reliability of human judgments and address privacy, security, and auditability concerns.

Critics argue that HITL can increase costs, extend response times, and introduce human error or bias; effective implementation requires clear roles, training, and governance to ensure consistent, explainable outcomes.

Historically, HITL draws on human-centered AI, expert systems, and active/interactive learning, and remains a common paradigm wherever critical decisions demand human judgment alongside automated capabilities.
