The name Hourn is derived from old seafaring terms, with scholars suggesting a meaning akin to harbor or corner.

Geography and climate describe Hourn as compact and waterfront-focused, backed by low hills and heathland. The climate is temperate maritime, with mild winters and cool summers; fog and sea breeze are common in late autumn and winter, shaping daily life and work patterns along the quay.

History records Hourn’s origins in the 12th century as a fishing village. Fortifications were added in the 14th century to protect trade routes, and the town grew as a coastwise trading entrepôt in the 16th and 17th centuries. Shipbuilding expanded in the 18th and 19th centuries, followed by infrastructural upgrades to the harbor in the 1860s. In modern times, Hourn retained its port function while diversifying toward services and tourism.
