Hormonspiralen
Hormonspiralen, also known as a hormonal intrauterine device (IUD), is a small, T-shaped piece of plastic inserted into the uterus. It is a highly effective method of reversible contraception. The primary mechanism of action is the slow release of a progestin hormone, levonorgestrel, directly into the uterus. This hormone thickens cervical mucus, making it difficult for sperm to reach the egg, and also thins the uterine lining, preventing implantation if fertilization does occur. In some cases, it can also inhibit ovulation.
Hormonspiralen is inserted by a healthcare professional and can remain in place for three to eight years,
