Properties vary with product, but typical advantages include good thermal insulation, humidity buffering, and renewable content, while strength is often lower than conventional structural panels unless combined in a system.

Advantages include renewable resource, potential for low embodied energy, good acoustic performance, and compatibility with timber framing. Limitations include moisture sensitivity if not protected, potential emissions from certain binders, and the need for careful detailing at joints and edges to prevent degradation.

European guidelines and standards regulate wood-based panels and insulation products, ensuring performance criteria for fire safety, emissions, and durability.
