Histioteuthidae is a family of deep-sea squid that are part of the order Teuthida. These cephalopods are characterized by their relatively small size and distinctive luminous organs called photophores. The family contains two genera, Histioteuthis and Stigmatoteuthis, each with several described species. Histioteuthidae are found in temperate and tropical waters worldwide, typically inhabiting mesopelagic and bathypelagic zones, meaning they live in the twilight and midnight zones of the ocean, often at depths between 200 and 2,000 meters.
