Stigmatoteuthis is a genus of deep-sea squid belonging to the family Onychoteuthidae. These cephalopods are characterized by their unique armament, which includes hooks on their arms and tentacles, a feature shared by many members of the Onychoteuthidae family. The genus is known for its bioluminescent capabilities, a common adaptation for survival in the aphotic zones of the ocean where sunlight does not penetrate. Stigmatoteuthis species are typically found in mesopelagic and bathyal zones, inhabiting depths ranging from a few hundred to several thousand meters.

Little is known about the specific behaviors and life cycle of Stigmatoteuthis. Like other onychoteuthids, they are presumed to be active predators, using their strong arms and hooks to capture prey such as fish and crustaceans. Their bioluminescence likely plays a role in attracting prey, communication, or defense through counter-illumination, camouflaging them against faint downwelling light. The distribution of Stigmatoteuthis species is generally oceanic, with specimens reported from various ocean basins, suggesting a wide but sparsely populated range. Research on this genus is limited due to the challenges of sampling deep-sea organisms. Current understanding is primarily based on a few collected specimens and observations made during deep-sea expeditions.
