Hihnasysteemi

Hihnasysteemi, commonly referred to in English as a belt drive system, is a mechanical arrangement that transmits power between shafts using a flexible belt that contacts pulleys. The principal components are the belt, driver and driven pulleys, a belt tensioner or other tensioning device, idlers, and a supporting frame with bearings. Belts can be flat or toothed, and drive arrangements are typically categorized by friction drives (flat and V-belts) or positive drives (timing belts).

Friction-based belts transmit power through surface contact and rely on belt material, pulley geometry, and tension to prevent slip. Timing belts, a type of synchronous belt, use teeth to maintain a fixed speed ratio and prevent slip. Belt materials range from natural and synthetic rubber to polyurethane, often reinforced with fabric cords (such as polyester or aramid) to improve strength and durability. The choice of belt type and material depends on torque, speed, center distance, environmental conditions, and required maintenance interval.

Advantages of hihnasysteemi include compactness, simplicity, relatively low cost, and the ability to accommodate misalignment and thermal expansion. Disadvantages include potential belt wear and stretch, limit on high-torque applications, need for proper alignment and tensioning, and periodic replacement.

Typical applications span automotive accessory drives, industrial conveyors, machine tools, and various consumer and industrial machinery. Design considerations emphasize selecting appropriate belt type and material, determining center distance and speed ratio, ensuring correct tension, and scheduling regular inspection and replacement to maintain performance and safety.
