HigherHLB
HigherHLB is a theoretical framework that extends the hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) system used to predict the emulsifying behavior of surfactants. It proposes an expanded scale, commonly up to 40, to accommodate highly hydrophilic or amphiphilic compounds and to provide finer discrimination for difficult formulations. The aim is to improve the selection of surfactants for both oil-in-water and water-in-oil emulsions, particularly in systems with unusual oil phases, high electrolyte content, or nonstandard processing conditions.
The concept emerged in the late 2010s within the field of colloidal and interface science and has
Methodology centers on deriving HigherHLB values by combining the traditional HLB number with additional molecular descriptors
