Highcountry refers to a geographic region of significant elevation, typically characterized by rugged terrain, cooler temperatures, and sparse vegetation compared to surrounding lower areas. The term is most commonly used in countries with prominent mountain ranges, such as Australia, the United States, Canada, and South Africa. In Australia, the High Country is a region of the Australian Alps in Victoria and New South Wales, known for ski resorts, alpine lakes, and unique flora. In the United States, the High Country often describes parts of the Rocky Mountains, the Sierra Nevada, and the Appalachian Mountains where elevation exceeds 1,000 meters (3,280 feet). South Africa’s High Country lies in the northeastern part of the province of KwaZulu-Natal near the Drakensberg Mountains, featuring high peaks, snowfields, and alpine grasslands.

Highcountry ecosystems are adapted to harsh climatic conditions, including lower oxygen levels, higher UV radiation, and greater diurnal temperature variations. Plant communities frequently consist of cushion plants, heath, and montane grasses, while wildlife may include specialized species such as the mountain goat, snow hare, or alpine marmot.
