Hfokozatot

Hfokozatot, also known as "HFO" (High-Frequency Oscillation), refers to a specialized form of mechanical ventilation used primarily in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) to support extremely premature infants with respiratory distress. This technique involves delivering rapid, small tidal volumes at high frequencies (typically 3–15 Hz) to maintain adequate gas exchange without causing lung overdistension, which can occur with conventional mechanical ventilation.

The primary goal of HFO is to minimize lung injury by reducing shear stress and cyclic stretching of the alveoli. It is particularly beneficial for infants with conditions such as bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH), or those requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). Unlike traditional ventilation, HFO relies on the infant’s own respiratory effort to drive gas exchange, promoting spontaneous breathing and reducing the need for sedation.

Studies suggest that HFO may improve oxygenation, reduce the risk of air leaks, and shorten the duration of mechanical ventilation compared to conventional methods. However, its use requires specialized equipment and trained personnel, limiting its availability to certain high-resource NICUs. While generally well-tolerated, potential complications include barotrauma, hemodynamic instability, or transient metabolic acidosis, though these are less common than with conventional ventilation.

HFO was first introduced in the 1980s and has since become a standard option for managing severe respiratory failure in neonates. Its application continues to evolve, with ongoing research exploring its efficacy in other pediatric and adult populations with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).
