Heutig

Heutig is a German adjective meaning pertaining to today or current, and is commonly translated as "today’s" or "present-day." It is used to describe things that relate to the current day or period, such as a date, situation, or events, for example “die heutige Situation” or “das heutige Datum.”

The word is formed from heute (today) plus the adjectival suffix -ig. It is typically placed before the noun it modifies and agrees with gender, number, and case like other adjectives ending in -ig. In standard usage it appears most often in attributive position; predicative use is rare or literary, and in everyday speech speakers usually use heute or heutzutage in adverbial or temporal senses.

Declension follows the regular patterns of German adjectives. After the definite article der/die/das: der heutige Tag, die heutige Woche, das heutige Datum, die heutigen Nachrichten. After an indefinite article: ein heutiger Tag, eine heutige Situation, ein heutiges Datum. In the strong (no article) form, masculine singular can appear as heutiger Tag, feminine as heutige Nachricht, neuter as heutiges Datum, and the plural often as heutige Nachrichten. The adjective is considered somewhat formal or literary; in common speech heute or heutzutage may be preferred for time references.
