Havumetsät
Havumetsät, or coniferous boreal forests, are forests where conifer species dominate the canopy. In the Fennoscandian region—Finland, Sweden and Norway—these forests cover large areas in cold, northern climates, characterized by long winters and short, intense growing seasons. The principal canopy species are Pinus sylvestris (Scots pine) and Picea abies (Norway spruce), often with a subcanopy of Betula species (birches). The ground layer frequently hosts mosses, lichens and bilberry, while soils are typically acidic and nutrient-poor due to slow decomposition of needle litter and low temperatures.
