Hausarzt

Hausarzt is the term used in German-speaking countries for a physician who serves as the primary care provider and the first point of contact for patients. The Hausarzt is responsible for comprehensive medical care across all age groups, emphasizing long-term, continuous care and the coordination of the patient’s overall health needs.

Typical duties include taking medical histories, performing physical examinations, diagnosing and treating common illnesses, managing chronic diseases (such as diabetes or hypertension), prescribing medications, ordering tests, and providing preventive services such as vaccinations and health screenings. The Hausarzt also offers health counseling on lifestyle factors and coordinates care when specialist consultation or hospital admission is needed.

In many systems, the Hausarzt functions as a gatekeeper who guides patients through the healthcare system by organizing referrals to specialists and integrating information from different providers. In Germany, patients generally may visit specialists without a referral, but there are initiatives and models (Hausarztmodell) that encourage designation of a primary care physician to coordinate care. In Austria and Switzerland, general practitioners more commonly act as the central coordinator of care.

Training typically involves completing a medical degree followed by residency or vocational training in general practice/family medicine; physicians may earn board certification in Allgemeinmedizin (general practice) and participate in continuing education. Practices are usually private or group practices with a team of medical assistants or nurses.

The Hausarzt remains central to preventive medicine, vaccination programs, and early detection of diseases, and serves as a steady point of contact in times of illness or life events.
