Hastighetsdämpande

Hastighetsdämpande, commonly translated as speed bumps or speed humps, are physical traffic calming devices placed on roads to reduce vehicle speed. Their primary purpose is to enhance safety, particularly in areas with high pedestrian activity such as residential neighborhoods, school zones, and parks. By forcing drivers to slow down, these devices minimize the risk and severity of accidents involving pedestrians and cyclists.

The design of hastighetsdämpande varies, but they are typically raised structures made of asphalt, rubber, or concrete. They can be rounded or trapezoidal in shape and are strategically positioned at intervals along a road. The height and length of these devices are engineered to be effective at reducing speed without causing excessive discomfort or damage to vehicles that adhere to the recommended speed limits.

While effective in slowing traffic, hastighetsdämpande can also have drawbacks. They may cause noise pollution from vehicles passing over them, and in some cases, can lead to increased braking and acceleration, potentially negating some of the intended environmental benefits. Emergency vehicles may also experience slight delays, although designs are often considered to minimize this impact.
