Hartslagmeters

Hartslagmeters, often called heart-rate monitors in English, are devices that measure heart rate in beats per minute (bpm). They are used to monitor cardiovascular activity during rest or physical exertion and can transmit data to watches, smartphones, or gym equipment. Most models provide real-time readouts and store historical data for analysis.

Most hartslagmeters operate using one of two methods. Chest-worn devices use electrodes to detect the heart's electrical activity (ECG) and are generally considered more accurate during movement. Optical wrist- or arm-based meters employ photoplethysmography (PPG), which detects changes in blood volume by shining light into the skin and measuring reflected light.

Common uses include training optimization, where heart-rate zones guide effort, recovery assessment, and general health monitoring. Data can be reviewed after workouts or during sleep, where some devices estimate resting heart rate and variability. Many products integrate with fitness apps, wearables ecosystems, and gym equipment.

Accuracy and limitations vary by device and conditions. Motion artifacts, poor sensor contact, tattoos, skin tone, and ambient light can affect optical sensors; chest straps may detach or shift during activity. Consumer devices are typically not medical-grade and should not replace clinical ECG in diagnosing heart conditions. In clinical contexts, electrocardiography and specialized monitors are used to obtain definitive heart measurements.
