Hardwarekrüpteerimine, also known as hardware encryption, refers to the process of encrypting data using dedicated hardware components rather than relying solely on software. This approach offers several advantages, primarily in terms of performance and security.

The core principle of hardware encryption is the use of specialized circuits, often found on processors or dedicated encryption modules, to perform cryptographic operations. These circuits are designed for speed, meaning that encryption and decryption processes occur much faster than they would with software-based methods. This is particularly beneficial for applications that handle large amounts of data or require real-time encryption, such as full-disk encryption or secure communication protocols.

From a security perspective, hardware encryption can be more robust. The encryption keys are typically stored and managed within the hardware itself, making them inaccessible to software-level attacks. This isolation helps protect sensitive keys from being compromised by malware or other system vulnerabilities. Many modern devices, including smartphones and laptops, incorporate hardware encryption capabilities, often as part of their central processing unit (CPU) or as a separate security chip.

Examples of hardware encryption in action include the encryption engines within solid-state drives (SSDs) that automatically encrypt data written to the drive, or the secure enclaves on some mobile processors that protect biometric data and encryption keys. While software encryption remains prevalent, hardware encryption is increasingly integrated into devices to enhance both performance and security for sensitive information.
