Handlapping
Handlapping is a manual finishing process used to achieve a precise fit and smooth surface on mating parts. It involves using an abrasive compound, often a paste or slurry, applied to one or both surfaces. One part is then rubbed against the other, either by hand or with a simple fixture, allowing the abrasive particles to remove small amounts of material from both surfaces. This process is particularly useful for fitting components such as bearings, valves, and seals, where a very tight tolerance and a leak-proof seal are critical.
The abrasive compound typically consists of fine grit particles suspended in a carrier, such as oil or
Handlapping is a slow process and is generally used for final fitting rather than for rough shaping.
