Hakutaulukot, or lookup tables, are data structures that store precomputed values to enable fast retrieval. They map keys to values and are often used to replace expensive computations with simple table lookups. Common implementations include direct-indexed arrays for small integer keys, hash tables for general keys, and balanced search trees when ordered iteration is needed.

There are static and dynamic varieties. Static lookup tables are precomputed and updated only when the data changes, making lookups extremely fast but less flexible. Dynamic lookup tables support insertions, deletions, and updates, which can incur overhead such as resizing or rehashing in hash-based implementations.

Performance characteristics depend on the implementation. Direct indexing offers O(1) lookup under ideal conditions but requires a preallocated range of keys. Hash tables typically provide average-case O(1) lookups, with collisions handled by chaining or open addressing. Balanced trees offer O(log n) lookups but preserve key order, which can be advantageous for certain algorithms. Cache locality and memory usage are important practical considerations, as poor layout can negate theoretical speed advantages.

Common applications include replacing repetitive mathematical functions with precomputed values (for example, sine or square root tables), mapping character encodings, dictionary or locale data, and enabling fast switches in compilers or interpreters. Limitations include memory consumption, especially for large key spaces, and the overhead of maintaining dynamic tables.
