Hachiks

Hachiks are a fictional species of small, semi-domesticated mammals from the coastal archipelago of Shirea. They are commonly kept as companion animals and are valued for their intelligence and sociable nature. The term hachik derives from a local language and appears in contemporary in-world literature and folklore.

They measure 25 to 40 cm in length and weigh 3 to 6 kg. They have soft, dense fur in colors from sandy beige to charcoal, a rounded face, short snout, alert ears, and a long, flexible tail used for balance.

Hachiks inhabit coastal mangrove forests and forest edges across the Shirea archipelago. They are omnivorous, feeding on fruits, seeds, insects, and small invertebrates, and they are adept climbers and swimmers.

They live in small family groups of five to twelve, with communal care of the young. They show problem-solving abilities and respond well to positive reinforcement training. Their behavior often includes cooperative foraging and mutual grooming.

Breeding occurs year-round with a peak in the wet season. Gestation lasts 60 to 70 days, and litters average two to four kits. Kits are altricial at birth and become independent after eight to twelve weeks, reaching maturity around one to two years.

In the world of Shirea, hachiks are kept as pets and used as therapy animals or for light assistance tasks. They face threats from habitat loss and invasive predators, and captive populations exist in sanctuaries and homes under local regulations.

Culturally, hachiks appear in folklore and art as symbols of loyalty and companionship, and annual festivals celebrate their role in human communities.
