Haarkoloriertechnik refers to the techniques and processes used to change the coloration of human hair. The practice includes a variety of methods ranging from permanent dyes to temporary color sprays, each with its own mechanisms and intended results.

The origins of hair coloring trace back to ancient civilizations such as Egypt, where henna was applied for ornamental purposes. Over centuries, pigments and chemical agents evolved, leading to the modern formulations of neutral, semi‑permanent, and permanent dyes.

Permanent hair color replaces the hair’s natural melanin by penetrating the cuticle and chemically altering the pigment core. Semi‑permanent dyes coat the hair shaft and fade gradually with washing, while temporary products sit on the surface and are wiped off or washed away after a single use. Highlights, balayage, and ombre techniques combine these products to create layering effects without creating a uniform tone.

Most commercial dyes rely on oxidizing agents such as hydrogen peroxide to activate the dye molecules. The presence or absence of ammonia, pH‑adjusting agents, and conditioning additives determines the dye’s strength, longevity, and potential to damage hair.

The typical application procedure begins with a strand or patch test for sensitivity. Hair is washed, towel‑dried, and then mixed with developer. After evenly applying the mixture, the hair is allowed to process for a period specified by the manufacturer. Rinse, condition, and subsequent care influence the final hue and durability.
