Balayage is a hair coloring technique in which color is painted onto the hair freehand to create a natural, sun-kissed effect. The term balayage comes from the French word balayer, meaning to sweep or brush away. The method originated with French colorists in the 1970s and became widely popular in the 1990s and 2000s as a low-maintenance alternative to traditional highlights.

In practice, color is applied with a sweeping, hand-painted motion rather than using foil. A lightener or hair color is painted onto the mid-lengths and ends, while the roots are left darker or softly tinted to maintain contrast. The goal is a soft, dimensional transition with a seamless blend that mimics natural lightening from sun exposure and requires less noticeable regrowth.

Balayage contrasts with other highlighting methods. Compared with foil highlights, balayage yields a more natural, blended look and can reduce the frequency of touch-ups. Ombré and sombre describe broader color effects: ombré typically shows a strong gradient from roots to ends, while sombre is a softer version. Balayage can be adapted to many base colors and hair lengths for subtle to more pronounced results.

The process typically involves a consultation, sectioning, color formulation, freehand application, processing, washing, and toning. Maintenance varies, but regrowth is often less conspicuous, with touch-ups every 8 to 12 weeks common. Suitability includes most hair types and lengths. Careful application minimizes damage from lightening; aftercare includes color-safe shampoo, conditioning, and sun protection to preserve vibrancy.
