It is not a formal standard, but a label for approaches that enable content encoded in one codec to be processed for use in the other, typically via transcoding pipelines or translation components.

Technical approaches commonly involve transcoding: decoding H.264 to raw frames, then encoding to AV1; or decoding AV1 to raw frames and re-encoding to H.264. Some efforts explore partial bitstream translation that attempts to map certain elements across formats, but there is no widely reliable method to perform lossless bitstream conversion due to fundamental differences in prediction, transform, and entropy coding. Transcoding pipelines typically include color space normalization (often YUV 4:2:0) and timing adjustments, with real-time performance strongly dependent on hardware acceleration and software optimization.

Licensing and status: AV1 is designed as royalty-free, whereas H.264 remains patent-encumbered through various licensing pools. Any tooling that decodes or encodes H.264 may be subject to H.264 patent licensing, while AV1 implementations may rely on royalty-free configurations. Because H264AV1 is not an official standard, capabilities, performance, and quality can vary across implementations.

Applications and adoption: The term is mainly used in discussions about migrating from H.264 to AV1 or managing mixed pipelines in content delivery networks. It is of interest to content producers, broadcasters, and hardware manufacturers evaluating upgrade paths and interoperability strategies.
