Gyalogosok

Gyalogosok is the Hungarian term for pedestrians, i.e., people who travel on foot. The term encompasses walkers of all ages who use sidewalks, crossings, and other pedestrian facilities in urban and rural environments. Pedestrian movement is a core aspect of transport planning in Hungary, where streets are designed to accommodate foot traffic alongside motor vehicles and cyclists.

In Hungary, the road traffic code (KRESZ) outlines the rights and duties of pedestrians and drivers. Pedestrians have priority at marked pedestrian crossings, and drivers must yield to people who are crossing or waiting to cross. When there is no traffic light, pedestrians should cross at designated crosswalks where available and behave predictably, while pedestrians should use sidewalks and avoid stepping into the roadway suddenly. If no sidewalk exists, pedestrians should walk on the edge of the roadway facing oncoming traffic.

Public spaces in Hungary are increasingly organized into walkable areas, with zebra crossings (átkelőhely) and pedestrian zones in many towns and cities. Traffic calming, narrower streets, and dedicated pedestrian signals are employed to improve safety and accessibility, particularly for children, the elderly, and people with disabilities.

Safety and health: Walking is promoted as a healthy, low-emission mode of transport. Public campaigns emphasize visibility at night, use of reflective clothing, and adherence to signals to reduce accidents. Pedestrian safety remains a priority in urban planning, with ongoing efforts to improve walkability and reduce vehicle speeds.
