Gummibollards

Gummibollards, also known as rubber bollards, are flexible protective posts used to deter vehicle intrusion while reducing damage to vehicles and adjacent infrastructure. They are typically made from natural or synthetic rubber, elastomer compounds, or rubber-coated steel cores, and may feature high-visibility colors and reflective bands.

There are several variants, including surface-mounted and embedded designs. Some bollards incorporate a steel core for rigidity, while fully rubber versions rely on deformability to absorb impact. They are designed to yield or bend on contact and then return to their original shape, or to dissipate energy to reduce the severity of a collision. Their appearance often emphasizes visibility with bright colors and reflective material.

Gummibollards are commonly employed to protect pedestrian zones, storefronts, parking lots, hospital campuses, and other areas where vehicle traffic interfaces with people or sensitive infrastructure. Installation methods vary and may involve embedding a sleeve in a concrete foundation or mounting on a prepared surface with anchors. Regular inspection is recommended to assess wear, UV degradation, and any loss of structural integrity.

Advantages of rubber bollards include lower cost and easier installation compared with rigid metal bollards, the ability to absorb impact energy at lower speeds, and reduced secondary damage to vehicles. Limitations include lower maximum crash resistance in high-speed scenarios, potential weather- or UV-related degradation, and the need for periodic replacement after repeated impacts or heavy use.

Gummibollards are widely used in urban safety infrastructure and are selected based on site requirements, local standards, and maintenance considerations.
