Guanacastes

Guanacastes are large trees belonging to the genus Enterolobium, native to tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas. The most well-known species is Enterolobium cyclocarpum, also known as the elephant ear tree or the national tree of Costa Rica. These trees are characterized by their distinctive flat, woody seed pods, which resemble a guanacaste, an ear of a cow, hence the common name.

Guanacaste trees are fast-growing and can reach impressive heights, often exceeding 20 meters. They have a broad, umbrella-shaped canopy that provides significant shade, making them a popular choice for landscaping and as a source of shade in pastures. The wood of the Guanacaste tree is relatively lightweight and easy to work with, historically used for furniture, carving, and construction. The leaves are bipinnately compound and feathery.

The flowers are typically white and produced in clusters, attracting pollinators. The seed pods contain multiple seeds embedded in a sticky pulp. While not typically consumed by humans, the pulp has been used in traditional medicine and for animal feed in some regions. Guanacastes play an important ecological role, providing habitat and food for various wildlife. They are generally resilient trees, adapted to a range of soil conditions, though they prefer well-drained soils.
