Groundballs

A groundball is a batted ball in baseball or softball that travels along or close to the ground. It is one of the most common outcomes of a hit. The trajectory of a groundball typically ends in fair territory, where fielders attempt to field it. The speed and angle at which a groundball is hit can vary significantly, influencing how difficult it is to field.

Fielding a groundball requires quick reflexes, proper body positioning, and a secure glove. Fielders aim to get in front of the ball, keeping their eyes on it as it approaches, and scoop it up cleanly. Once fielded, the player will attempt to make a throw to a base to get an out, often a first baseman. The success of fielding a groundball can determine the outcome of an inning or even a game.

Groundballs can be hit in various directions. A groundball hit directly at a fielder is generally easier to field than one hit with a lot of speed or one that takes an unpredictable bounce. Infielder positions such as shortstop, second base, third base, and first base are primarily responsible for fielding groundballs. Outfielders may also field groundballs, particularly those hit with less force or that roll into the outfield.
