GridSystems

Grid systems, also referred to as gridsystems, are structured frameworks comprising intersecting lines that partition a surface into columns and rows, providing a skeleton for arranging content. They are used across media—including print, web, and product design—to achieve alignment, rhythm, and scalable layouts. A grid defines columns, rows, gutters (the space between columns), and margins, enabling designers to place elements consistently and predictably.

In typography and print design, grids support typographic baselines and modular blocks. Baseline grids ensure consistent line spacing, while modular and hierarchical grids organize content into units that can be rearranged while preserving visual order.

In digital design, grid systems underpin responsive and adaptive layouts. Modern web grids often rely on a fixed or fluid column count, commonly a 12-column structure, with breakpoints that reflow content for different viewport sizes. CSS Grid and CSS Flexbox provide native mechanisms to implement grids, while many UI frameworks offer predefined grid patterns, such as fixed-width containers, fluid gutters, or responsive column reflow.

The history of grid systems traces back to medieval and Renaissance book design and later the rise of typographic grids in the 19th and 20th centuries, culminating in the Swiss typography movement that emphasized clear modular grids. With digital typography and responsive design, grids evolved into flexible tools that balance consistency with flexibility.

Applications include editorial layouts, dashboards, e-commerce grids, and user interfaces. Good grid design supports hierarchy, scannability, and accessibility by ensuring predictable alignment and proportional spacing.
