Greppbredd

Greppbredd, or grip width, is a term used in ergonomics and design to describe the horizontal dimension of a grip relative to the hand. It refers to the width or diameter of a handle or grip area that a person can comfortably grasp with a secure, functional hold. The measurement can be taken for cylindrical or non-cylindrical grips and is often expressed as the internal width that the fingers and palm contact when holding the object.

Measurement methods vary with context. For round grips, greppbredd is commonly described as the grip diameter that fits a typical power grip. For non-circular or ergonomic shapes, it is defined as the maximum usable width encountered by the hand in a practical grip. In practice, measurements are taken with the hand in a representative grip position, and may consider factors such as finger length, palm width, and thumb placement.

The concept is important because grip width influences usability, comfort, and safety. A grip that is too narrow can cause excessive squeezing, while one that is too wide can reduce finger contact and control. Correct greppbredd improves efficiency, reduces fatigue, and lowers the risk of slippage or injury.

Applications are widespread. In product design, greppbredd informs handles for tools and appliances, door hardware, and consumer electronics.
