Greifensee

Greifensee is a municipality in the canton of Zurich, Switzerland. It belongs to the district of Uster and lies on the northern shore of Lake Greifensee, about 15 kilometers northeast of Zurich city. The municipality includes the village of Greifensee and several surrounding quarters.

The lake is a glacial body known for its clear water and diverse birdlife. The shoreline and surrounding woodland provide habitats for waterfowl and waders, and the area is a popular recreation site for walking, cycling and picnicking. A nature reserve helps protect the lake's ecosystems.

Greifensee has medieval origins. The village is dominated by Schloss Greifensee, a castle that stands on the lake's edge and dates to the Middle Ages. The site and the town have been linked with regional history including conflicts in the medieval and early modern periods.

The local economy is predominantly service-oriented, with retail, small businesses and some light industry. Many residents commute to Zurich or Uster for work. The municipality provides local schools, a library, and cultural facilities.

Greifensee is served by Greifensee railway station on the Zurich S-Bahn network, with regular connections to Zurich and to the surrounding towns. Local bus lines extend to neighboring communities, and the area is accessible by road from the larger Zurich metropolitan area.
