Schloss is a German noun with two primary meanings in modern usage: a castle or palace, and a mechanical lock. In everyday language, the intended sense is determined by context. When used in place names or architectural descriptions, it usually denotes a grand, secular residence built for power, display, and residence.

As a castle or palace, Schloss denotes a noble residence dating from the Middle Ages to the modern era. Many examples exhibit formal gardens, courtyards, and ornate interiors, and today they are frequently used as museums, state buildings, or cultural venues. The term is often contrasted with Burg, which emphasizes a fortified fortress designed for defense rather than dignified living.

In addition, Schloss also means a lock, a device used to secure doors, chests, or gates, and the mechanism that operates it. The two senses share the same spelling and pronunciation but are distinguished by context; discussions of locks may appear with terms like Schlüssel (key) and related terminology.
