It is not a widely adopted formal style, but a label applied by some historians to characterize buildings that incorporate both Romanesque and Gothic elements.

Architectural characteristics include thick masonry and rounded or semi-circular arches typical of Romanesque, combined with early Gothic features such as ribbed vaults and pointed arches. Elevations may show increased height and slenderness, while windows remain relatively small in comparison to later Gothic cathedrals. Decoration tends toward robust portals and sculptural tympana, with occasional emergence of tracery and flying buttresses in transitional forms.

Geographical variation exists: some northern French and Central European churches display transitional features that scholars attribute to GothicRomanesque, reflecting local masonry traditions and the gradual adoption of pointed arches. The term often highlights the non-linear evolution of medieval architecture, where builders experimented with height and light while retaining traditional structural methods.
