Goofyfooted

Goofyfooted is a term used in various board sports such as skateboarding, snowboarding, surfing, and wakeboarding. It describes a stance where a rider's right foot is forward, leading the board. This is in contrast to the more common "regular" stance, where the left foot is forward.

The origin of the term "goofy" is often attributed to a 1937 Disney cartoon featuring Pluto the dog surfing. In the cartoon, Pluto is shown riding a surfboard with his right foot forward, which was perceived as unusual or "goofy" at the time. This association stuck and became the slang term for this particular stance.

Whether a person is goofyfooted or regularfooted is generally determined by their natural inclination. When asked to slide on a slippery surface, most people will instinctively place one foot forward. The foot they choose to place forward is typically the one they will use as their lead foot in board sports. There is no inherent advantage or disadvantage to being goofyfooted or regularfooted. Proficiency in board sports is developed through practice and skill, regardless of the rider's stance. Many professional athletes in these sports use both stances, and some are ambidextrous, able to ride comfortably in either regular or goofy.
