Goblinoids

Goblinoids are a common classification of monstrous humanoids found in many fantasy settings. The term typically encompasses creatures such as goblins, hobgoblins, and bugbears, though the exact members of this group can vary depending on the specific fictional universe. Generally, goblinoids are depicted as small, cunning, and often malicious beings, though their intelligence and societal structures can range from primitive tribes to more organized, militaristic societies.

Goblins are usually the smallest and most numerous of the goblinoids. They are often portrayed as cowardly, yet vicious, preferring to attack in large numbers or from ambush. Hobgoblins are typically larger, stronger, and more intelligent than goblins, often serving as their more disciplined and militaristic leaders. Bugbears are generally the largest and strongest, characterized by their brute force and a more solitary or small-group hunting tendency.

Physically, goblinoids share some common traits, often described as having green or brown skin, pointed ears, and sharp teeth. Their motivations are frequently rooted in greed, cruelty, or a desire for dominance. They inhabit a wide range of environments, from dark caves and underground tunnels to forests and ruins. Their societies, when present, are often hierarchical, with a clear chain of command, especially in the case of hobgoblins who may organize them into disciplined legions. While often depicted as antagonists, some portrayals allow for more complex characters or even alliances with other races.
