Gluggaskynjarar

Gluggaskynjarar, commonly known as "glider eagles" in English, are a group of large raptors primarily found in the highlands of Iceland. These birds belong to the genus *Hieraaetus*, specifically the species *Hieraaetus fasciatus*, though they are sometimes colloquially referred to as Icelandic variants of the Bonelli’s eagle (*Hieraaetus fasciatus*). Their name derives from the Icelandic words *glugga*, meaning "to peer" or "look through," and *skynjar*, meaning "sky," reflecting their habit of soaring high above the landscape.

Gluggaskynjarar are notable for their striking appearance, with a wingspan reaching up to 1.5 meters. They have a dark brown back, a lighter underside with dark barring, and a distinctive pale head. These eagles are primarily found in rugged, mountainous regions, where they hunt small mammals, birds, and occasionally reptiles. Their diet consists mainly of rabbits, ptarmigans, and other ground-dwelling prey, though they may also scavenge carrion.

Breeding occurs in rocky cliffs or steep slopes, where they construct nests lined with grass and feathers. Females typically lay one to three eggs, and both parents take turns incubating and raising the chicks. Gluggaskynjarar are generally solitary birds, though they may gather in loose groups during migration or when food is abundant.

Conservation efforts have been important for these birds, as they face threats from habitat loss, human disturbance, and occasional poisoning. Their population in Iceland remains relatively stable, though they are considered vulnerable in some regions. Observing these majestic birds in their natural habitat is a highlight for many nature enthusiasts visiting Iceland’s highlands.
