Gesturebased refers to interaction systems that interpret human gestures as input to control digital devices. These interfaces translate movements of the hands, arms, face, or body into commands, using sensors such as cameras, depth sensors, infrared, radar, or wearables. Gesturebased interfaces enable hands-free, natural control in settings ranging from consumer electronics to industrial environments.

Modalities and technologies: Vision-based recognition uses cameras to track landmarks; depth sensors capture 3D data to improve accuracy. Wearable devices such as EMG armbands or inertial sensors provide input without line-of-sight. Some systems fuse modalities for robustness. Common gestures include waving, swiping, pinching, and more complex sign patterns.

Recognition and design: Typical pipelines include sensing, tracking, segmentation, feature extraction, and classification. Methods range from classic machine learning models to deep neural networks, with temporal models for dynamic gestures. Real-time performance and low latency are emphasized in many applications.

Applications: Gesturebased interfaces appear in smart TVs, smartphones, video game consoles, virtual and augmented reality, automotive controls, robotics, and physical rehabilitation.

Challenges: Variability among users and environments, occlusion, lighting, background clutter, fatigue, cultural differences, privacy concerns, and security issues such as inadvertent activations or spoofing. Ongoing research seeks to improve accuracy, robustness, and inclusivity.
