Geolokointi, also known as geolocation, is the identification of the real-world geographic location of an object, such as a mobile phone, computer, or other internet-connected device. This process typically involves determining a device's coordinates on Earth's surface. Geolocation can be achieved through various methods, with the most common being the use of GPS (Global Positioning System) satellites. When a device has a clear view of the sky, it can receive signals from multiple GPS satellites to calculate its precise location.

Other methods for geolokointi include Wi-Fi positioning, which uses the known locations of Wi-Fi hotspots to estimate a device's position, and cellular network triangulation, which approximates a device's location based on its proximity to cell towers. IP address lookup is another technique, although it generally provides a less precise location, often limited to a city or region. Geolocation has numerous applications, including navigation services, location-based advertising, emergency services, asset tracking, and data analysis. Privacy concerns are significant with geolocation, as the ability to track individuals' movements can raise issues regarding personal data protection and surveillance. Regulations and user consent mechanisms are often in place to address these concerns.
