Genyornis

Genyornis is an extinct genus of large, flightless birds that lived in Australia during the Pleistocene epoch. These birds are classified as dromornithids, a family of extinct terror birds. Genyornis newtoni is the only species currently recognized within the genus. Fossil evidence suggests these birds were widespread across the Australian continent.

Genyornis were massive animals, with adults estimated to stand around 2 meters (6.6 feet) tall and weigh between 200 and 240 kilograms (440 and 530 pounds). They possessed powerful legs, indicating they were likely terrestrial, and had a robust build. Their skulls were large, and their beaks were broad and relatively flat, suggesting a herbivorous or possibly omnivorous diet. Evidence from fossilized stomach contents and beak morphology indicates they consumed a variety of plant material.

The extinction of Genyornis is thought to have occurred around 50,000 years ago, coinciding with the arrival of humans in Australia. While the exact cause of their extinction is debated, human hunting and habitat alteration are considered significant contributing factors. The discovery of Genyornis eggshell fragments, some bearing evidence of butchery, supports the hypothesis that humans interacted with these birds. Genyornis represents one of the most iconic extinct megafauna of Australia.
