Geländesporns

Geländesporns, often simply referred to as spurs, are a type of equestrian equipment used to influence a horse's movement. They are attached to a rider's boots and consist of a metal shank that extends backward from the heel. The shank typically ends in a blunt point, a roller, or a small knob, though sharper or more aggressive designs exist. The purpose of a spur is to provide a rider with a more refined and subtle means of communication with the horse than leg aids alone. When applied with pressure, the spur can encourage the horse to move forward, move away from the leg, or increase its impulsion.

The use of spurs requires a skilled rider who can apply them with precision and sensitivity. Incorrect or overly harsh use can cause pain, distress, or injury to the horse, leading to behavioral problems and a breakdown in communication. Different disciplines within equestrian sport have varying rules regarding the type and length of spurs permitted, reflecting different approaches to horsemanship and the desired levels of stimulation. In some disciplines, spurs are considered essential for advanced training and fine-tuning a horse's responsiveness, while in others, their use is discouraged or prohibited altogether. The effectiveness of spurs relies heavily on the rider's ability to apply them judiciously, acting as an extension of the rider's leg aids to elicit a specific response from the horse.
