Geländesporn
Geländesporn is a term used in alpine skiing and snowboarding to describe a specific type of terrain feature. It refers to a narrow, often steep, spur or ridge of snow that projects out from a larger slope. These features are typically formed by wind deposition or by the accumulation of snow around obstacles on the mountainside. Geländesporns can present a challenge to skiers and snowboarders due to their often unpredictable nature and the rapid change in slope angle they can create. They can lead to sudden drops or abrupt changes in terrain, requiring advanced technique and quick decision-making. The term itself is German, translating roughly to "terrain spur" or "terrain spurting out." While not always intentionally sought after, geländesporns can add an element of natural obstacle to a run, and skilled riders may choose to interact with them in various ways, such as jumping off them or riding along their edges. Their presence can significantly alter the character of a slope, transforming a seemingly straightforward run into one with distinct challenges.
