Gazans

Gazans are residents of the Gaza Strip, a Palestinian territory on the Mediterranean coast. The strip covers about 365 square kilometers and is bordered by Israel and Egypt. The population is around two million, making it one of the most densely populated areas in the world. The majority are Palestinian Arabs, predominantly Sunni Muslims; Arabic is the primary language.

History and governance: Gaza came under Egyptian administration before 1967 and was occupied by Israel after the 1967 war. Israel withdrew in 2005. In 2007, Hamas took control after clashes with Fatah, leading to a political split with the West Bank-based Palestinian Authority. Since then, Hamas has exercised de facto authority in Gaza. Elections at the Palestinian level have been largely dormant since 2006.

Economy and living conditions: The economy is heavily constrained by a blockade and limited access to markets. Unemployment is high, especially among young people, and many Gazans rely on aid. Electricity is frequently limited; water and sanitation infrastructure face challenges. Health and education sectors operate under strain and frequent damage from conflict.

Conflict and humanitarian context: Gaza has experienced several major conflicts with Israel since 2008, causing casualties and extensive damage. International organizations provide aid, and ceasefires and negotiations periodically affect daily life. The situation remains closely tied to broader Israeli-Palestinian politics and regional dynamics.
