Garnisonen is a term used in several Nordic languages to denote a district or area surrounding a military garrison. As a toponym, Garnisonen appears in city plans and historical records in Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. The name literally means “the garrison” and is typically applied to neighborhoods that grew up around barracks, parade grounds, and related military facilities.

Origin and use of the name: The word garnison originates from military terminology for a garrison. In Danish and Norwegian, the definite form garnisonen means “the garrison,” while in Swedish the form garnisonen is also used to refer to a garrisoned area. In many cities, the name was adopted to reflect the district’s historic function rather than current use.
