GDTtekens

GDTtekens envisions glyphs, diacritics, ligatures, punctuation, and symbols as discrete tokens with metadata. The goal is to improve consistency across platforms, simplify multilingual typography, and support scalable branding and accessibility in complex interfaces.

Token model and data

In this concept, each token carries an identifier, a glyph reference (which may point to a font glyph or a vector representation), and metadata such as language, typographic role (base character, diacritic, ligature, symbol), and rendering rules (size, color, alignment). Tokens can be composite, allowing ligatures or diacritic clusters to be expressed as token sequences rather than single code points.

Encoding and mapping

GDTtekens is designed as a design-token–style schema, often imagined in JSON or a similar format. The system is described as complementary to Unicode: internal design tokens map to Unicode for final rendering, while preserving consistent typography inside design workflows.

Critics note added complexity, potential divergence from established encoding practices, and the burden of maintaining mappings to Unicode. Proponents argue that token-based glyph management can streamline design decisions and enable more precise control of typography in large-scale products.
