This custom is deeply rooted in Hungarian rural culture and often carries symbolic meanings tied to protection, fertility, or the marking of significant life events.

The practice typically occurs during spring or early summer, when trees are in full bloom. Participants, usually women, would gather in groups to cut small branches from fruit trees, willows, or other deciduous trees. These branches were then used in various ways, such as weaving into wreaths, garlands, or decorative items for homes, churches, or communal spaces. In some regions, the branches were hung above doorways or windows to ward off evil spirits or bring good fortune.

Görgetésnek is also associated with certain festivals, such as Easter or the Feast of St. John (June 24th), where the act of cutting branches may have been part of larger celebrations. The branches collected were sometimes used in rituals to ensure a bountiful harvest or to bless newlywed couples.
